Located in central Alabama, on beautiful lake Martin, Wind Creek State Park offers everything you need for a great vacation. This is a great place to take your family or just go with friends for a great fishing or golfing weekend.
Lake Martin is one of the largest man made lakes in the United States. The Lake offers 44,000 acres of fishing, boating, swimming and water skiing. There are 9 islands on the lake, the most famous, chimney rock island, is a popular place for boaters to congregate. People come to climb up and jump off the 60 foot high Chimney rock into the water, or they come to watch others jump. Lake Martin was created when the Martin dam was built on the Tallapoosa river. The average depth of Lake Martin is over 100 feet.
Camping at wind creek state park
Wind creek state park has a modern campground with 626 camp sites, spread over 320 acres. Each campsite comes with a water hookup, an electric hookup, a picnic table and a grill. There is a centrally located playground for the kids, and bath houses throughout the campground. The rates for the campground are very reasonable, $18 per day and $108 per week. Wind Creek State Park has a nice sandy swimming beach that opens daily at 7 am.
Marina
The park contains a large marina. Part of the marina is a store where you can purchase your fishing license, firewood, some R.V. Supplies, and even rent a boat slip for $10 per day. The marina also offers several types of fishing and pontoon boats for rent, for ½ and full days. There are even a few campsites that are right on the water, where you can pull your boat up for the night.
Fishing
Fishing on Lake Martin may be a bit tougher than on some other reservoirs, because of the very clear water, but the fish populations are very good. The fish species available in the lake are, Large mouth Bass, Spotted Bass, Striped Bass, White Bass, Crappies, Channel Catfish, Flathead Catfish, Bluegills, and Red Ear Sunfish. There are several fishing tournaments held on the lake each year, if you are interested in tournament fishing.
The most productive fishing times are spring and fall. Though many anglers say that Lake Martin is the best winter Bass lake in the state. Because of the clear water, night fishing is very productive. Lake Martin is also a great crappie lake, the state record crappie, weighting 4 pounds 9 ounces was caught in Lake Martin in May of 2000. The Alabama record Grass Carp of 70 pounds was also taken from Lake Martin in 1999. Striped bass spend most of their time in 50 to 80 feet of water in the warmer months. When the water cools, they become more active and can be caught in shallower water with traditional bass methods, including top water lures.
Golf
If you're a golfer, there is a golf course just 6 miles away from the Wind creek state park. Lakewinds golf course is a par 70, 18 hole course, 5500 yards long, with several challenging water holes on the course. The green fees are extremely reasonable, $13.00 for 18 holes.
Hiking
If you enjoy hiking, there are 2 hiking trails in the park. One trail is 1.8 miles, the other is 3.8 miles in length. Wind creek state park also has a 10 mile long horse trail. They even have 16 special camp sites for horse campers.
Cabins
If camping isn't your thing, Wind creek state park, has 7 cabins for rent. The cabins come furnished with a microwave, sink, coffee maker, toaster, and a small refrigerator. You need to furnish the bedding, pillows, food, and cooking and eating utensils. The cabins rent for $70 per day, up to 4 people.

Wind creek state park is located in East central Alabama, 40 miles from Birmingham. The temperatures in the summer are generally in the 90's, spring and fall temperatures are comfortable. The average high temperature in January is 53 degrees. Wind Creek State Park has something for everyone, and plenty to keep your entire family busy on your vacation.
